The Interview Process/Questions for Massage Therapy Jobs: Helping You Prepare

Posted by Burke Williams on Mar 19, 2026

Over the past 40 years Burke Williams has employed thousands of massage therapists and is recognized as one of the pioneers in the day spa industry, which led to the idea for this post aimed at helping massage therapists throughout the world prepare for job interviews, including questions you may be asked along with the core skills that are required.

First and foremost, before we dig into the most common questions asked, it’s important to highlight the most valuable quality we look for, especially when it comes to massage therapists, is a high level of emotional intelligence, being able to read the room and your clients in order to deliver the most effective and meaningful care.

Delving in more, below are some of the questions we ask during the hiring process:

Why Did You Apply for this Massage Therapist Position?
The question is really aimed at gauging your passion for the role itself and also trying to understand why you applied for this job at Burke Williams or any other spa in the world. Why us? What is driving you? This can be anything from relocating to be closer to family or being done with the cold and moving to California for beautiful weather.

And most importantly, did you actually spend the time to visit our website, learn everything we’re about including the company culture and services we provide then intentionally apply to be a part of the team? That stands out to us.

How Do You Assess a New Client Before Starting a Treatment?
This question alone can be very revealing, offering insight into the Massage Therapist’s experience and approach to care. In a strong relationship with both a client and MT, taking the time to identify and understand their concerns from the outset is essential. Discussing challenges, possible solutions and clear expectations early on helps build trust, encourages open communication, and creates a more collaborative and effective therapeutic experience.

What Makes You Special as a Massage Therapist?
This really ties back to everything mentioned above including having the emotional intelligence combined with experience to deliver thoughtful and personalized care based on feedback you’re getting as opposed to thinking of massage therapy like a production line where everything fits in the same box. That’s not reality.

Whether you’re applying for a massage therapist job in California or anywhere else, hopefully this information helps and if you have any questions or are interested in applying for a job at Burke Williams our team is here to guide you through the process! Let’s Connect
