5 Skincare Terms Demystified

Posted by support on Dec 28, 2012

In a perfect world confusing terminology wouldn't leave us in the dark about important matters, especially when it comes to your skin. Trying to find the right products for you can become quite confusing if you aren’t able to decipher the small print.

To help you in your quest to be a better beauty consumer, we’ve decided to round up five common murky terms and describe them in ways you don’t need a translator to understand. How many do you know?

1. Humectants. Humectants are ingredients that help substances retain water. You’ll find humectants lending their nourishing powers in moisturizing products like H2V Moisture Enhance.

2. Dermis. The dermis is a layer of skin that rests just below the epidermis (the outer layer) and above the connective tissue. Damage to this layer of skin can result in fine lines and wrinkles. To prevent signs of aging, try products that contain the dermis-building ingredient Dermaxil like H2V Advance D3.

3. Antioxidants. These chemical guardians protect human cells from being oxidized or damaged. They intercept free radicals and other oxidizing agents to help protect against illness, disease and signs of aging. For this reason, you’ll find antioxidants in many anti-aging products like H2V G10.

4. Peptides. Think of peptides like tiny molecular building blocks. Without them, you wouldn’t have structures like collagen, a protein that is essential for soft and smooth skin. Products like H2V Transform R3 contain peptides to help your body build collagen naturally and keep skin looking its best.

5. Hyaluronic Acid. This substance occurs naturally in the human body. It works to cushion and lubricate joints and to keep skin smooth and supple. Diet, age and habits like smoking can deplete the body’s stores of hyaluronic acid, which is why products like H2V Moisture Enhance include this ingredient to promote youthful skin.

You know what they say – knowledge is power and when it comes to beauty products, the more lingo you learn, the more informed you’ll be. So the next time you’re on a spa date or chatting as you shop online, share some of the terms you’ve learned with your friends and spread the word. And if there’s a beauty term that has you stumped, head over to our Facebook page and tell us about it. Our spa experts will be happy to explain.
