At the Burke Williams Academy, continuing education is designed to be experienced, not just studied. Through hands-on practice, real-time feedback, and the opportunity to work directly with volunteer clients, therapists build skills they can immediately bring into the treatment room.

I spoke with one of the therapists from our first Manual Lymphatic Drainage class about her experience and how the training has influenced her work.

Name: Stephanie "Olive Cisneros

Title: Massage Therapist

Location: Burke Williams - Pasadena

How long with Burke Williams: 8 years

What inspired you to become a massage therapist?

My journey into massage therapy actually started in high school. My dad encouraged each of his children to learn a trade, and for me, he suggested massage therapy. It turned out to be something I had a natural connection to. My mom is what you would call a sobadora, a traditional Mexican massage practitioner.

What began as a practical decision quickly became something much more meaningful. It gave me flexibility, independence, and a way to support myself while continuing my education.

Had you taken any continuing education courses before joining the Burke Williams Academy?

Yes, I’ve taken several online CEU courses over the years through the American Massage Therapy Association and other platforms. I’ve always been interested in continuing to grow my knowledge.

What stood out to you about being part of the first Manual Lymphatic Drainage class?

I had taken a previous lymphatic course, but this class was much more in-depth and informative. It gave me a clearer understanding of the work and how to apply it in a meaningful way.

Was there a moment where something really clicked for you?

Yes. The way the class broke down the lymphatic capillaries and how the techniques work with the valves really helped everything come together. That was the moment I truly understood how the system works.

Did anything about the training surprise you?

I was surprised by how beneficial lymphatic work can be for conditions like fibromyalgia, and how much there is still to learn and specialize in within this field.

How did your confidence shift from the start of training to working on your first guests?

Before the class, I didn’t feel as confident in my technique because I didn’t fully understand the lymphatic system. After the training, I felt much more at ease and comfortable applying the work.

Was there a moment where you felt especially proud using this technique?

Yes. Being able to use it to help alleviate pain for my mom was a really meaningful moment for me.

How do you see this training supporting your long-term goals as a therapist?

This training has opened the door for me to continue specializing. My long-term goal is to pursue additional certifications including working with lymphedema, and build deeper expertise in this area.

What would you say to another therapist considering this class?

If you’re curious about lymphatic work, this class is a great foundation. It gives you the understanding you need to start building confidence and decide how you want to grow in this area.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Massage is both an art and a science. Knowledge becomes most valuable when it’s applied with intention and experience.
